Information For Boat And Yacht Sellers

There is no doubt that allowing a boat to sit on the market because she was overpriced or not prepared for sale will be expensive in the long run. Monthly slip rent, mortgage payments, bottom cleaning, general maintenance, insurance payments, they all add up. In San Diego it can cost the average boat owner $700 – $1,000 per month just to keep the boat in her slip.

When considering a listing agent what input do you need?

1.    Help with pricing

2.    Preparation for sale

3.    Exposure

4.    Marketing and a sustained sales effort

Choosing The Right Broker

Our mission at Ensign Yachts is to help and counsel the person or family interested in finding a proper boat for their pleasure and possibly live aboard needs.  Whether this is their first boat or possibly their next boat, we are here to help the boat buyer find the right boat for them.  We always have many very nice and different boats currently listed, but we will be very happy to search the local, state, and national listings to find the right boat that meets the buyer’s needs and budget.  We pride ourselves on being attentive and supportive in our approach to working with buyers and sellers and often enjoy lasting friendships with many of our clients.

Ensign International Yacht Brokerage have been in business in the same location for over 25 years.  The brokerage is located in a prime, high traffic, resort water front location on Harbor Island across from the San Diego airport. We also have an office located on Shelter Island near the famous Fiddler’s Green Restaurant.

Cabrillo Isle Marina is one of the largest marinas in San Diego. We can help you receive a brokerage discount at this marina when you list your boat with us for sale and bring it to this beautiful well run marina.

We have a full time staff at each of our sales offices and many part time sales people helping to expose our listed boats as well as assist boaters in the market for another boat.  We are open 7 days a week.

Online marketing of you listed boat is the most productive way in our matured internet age to expose your boat to many more potential buyers through out the State as well as the Country.  We make use of many multiple listing websites as well as numerous social media channels to advertise our listings and ur services to the lifestyle boater.

Choosing The Right Price

Ensign Yachts will assist you in pricing your boat properly.  What you may currently owe on a loan or the amount of money you may have spend on repairs and accessories may have a bearing on the asking price but it is not what is most important to setting a good market price.  We will not tell you what you may want to hear just to get your listing.  We will research sister boats currently on the market and review all similar boat that have sold in the past year or so and their actual selling prices which are only made viewable within the brokerage network.  At Ensign, we will also visit with you on your boat if possible and assess it condition and the major components that can add or subtract from the average selling prices.  There may be some items that we will suggest that for very little time and money could be improved to substantially increase the eventual selling price of the boat.  We can provide you with data from many sources and from our years of selling over 1000 boats a very accurate estimate of the ultimate selling price of your boat.

Preparing Your Yacht For Sale

First impressions count.

A dirty boat means that the first conversation we have is trying to explain that “a buyer should overlook a poor first impression”.  Not a good start.

Have the boat waxed.  Have her cleaned (and kept clean) both topside and below deck. Do not overlook the engine room. Consider hiring a detailing company to bring the boat up to standard. Not cheap but a good investment in your attempt to get the best possible price for your boat.

Give us a call, we have a list of preferred vendors and would be happy to make a recommendation.

Make sure everything works properly. No jury rigged systems. Make sure the boat runs well. Make sure your boat doesn’t smell. Clean the bilge. Pump out the holding tank. Get your personal belongings off the boat. Everything. If you don’t plan to sell it with the boat remove it.  Cluttered boats don’t show well.  Also, track down or take new photos of your boat while she’s underway and after she has been prepped and ready for showings.

Here’s a checklist you can use to figure out what to improve before we want to show the boat.  For each item, rate it on a scale from 1-5:

About The Selling Process

The process to sell your boat is usually smooth and event free.  At ensign we work hard to make this so by providing an extra effort right from the beginning.

  • We will meet with you on your boat and you can tell us all the good things you like about it.
  • We will inspect it and possibly make some suggestions to improve its sale ability.
  • Once we have discussed value we will agree on an asking price to be advertised with your boat.
  • Listing agreements will be signed by all parties in compliance with state law.
  • We will take pictures and possibly a walk through video of your boat and place them on our network of listing services and social media.
  • It will be the owner’s responsibility to maintain the boat and keep it clean for showings as well as ready for a sea trial and survey when that time happens.
  • Brokers from Ensign Yachts and other brokerages will from time to time visit your boat with prospective buyers and will encourage them to make an offer if it seems to fit their needs.
  • Once an offer has been made it will be presented and you will have the opportunity to accept the offer or make a counter offer.
  • If or when an agreed selling prices is arrived at the buyers will have a period of time to inspect and test the boat.  This will be coordinated with you the seller so that you can assist if possible and present the boat in it’s best performing light.
  • If the sea trial and survey go well we will proceed to the final funding a closing of the sales transaction.
